First introduced in 2014, the Honda Grom has been an undeniable worldwide success with over 750,000+ units sold. Having already cemented its place as the undisputed king of mini-moto, the latest iteration (3rd gen) looks to add to its growing legacy. For 2022 there’s a completely redesigned engine (higher compression ratio 10:1) producing 9.7 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 7.7 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm and a new 5th gear (wider gear ratio spread).
The fact that it’s more rare to see a completely stock Grom than a customized one is a testament to its appeal. This customizability factor would prove to be the catalyst for its success globally and translated to an ever growing niche community of like-minded riders. Therefore when we were first approached about building an official custom 2022 Grom for Honda, we kept all of you in mind and felt inspired to create something that would help push our community forward.
The team ultimately decided to build two 2022 Groms, the first of which would be the official Honda build that we named “Type-56” (signifying ‘S’ and ‘G” numerically). The idea was to pay homage to Honda’s storied racing heritage (HRC, HPD, Mugen, etc) with a track-themed 2022 Grom. By limiting the modifications to ones most can do themselves (that wouldn’t distract from the Grom’s new features), we hoped to inspire a new generation of Grom enthusiasts.
In terms of the design, we went with a blue and red color theme in tribute to the “HRC” colors, Honda’s motorcycle racing division. The seat angle was raised significantly, inspired by the styling of the 80’s HRC race bikes, while the custom seat itself was designed in-house and executed by Rogelio’s Auto Upholstery/RAU Engineering. For the livery, we drew inspiration from a 1981 CB1100R, deciding to stay consistent with Honda’s design language of that era. The under-cowl was custom made to fit perfectly with the new engine and the exhaust system, giving the bottom end full coverage to prevent any oil drips on the track.

We upgraded the suspension with a Racing Bros Adjustable Front Fork Cartridge Kit paired together with Racing Bros Front Lowering Kit and improved the braking system with Anchor ANC6 Brake Calipers + ANB13 Master Cylinder. The “Type 56” was also equipped with a GCraft Triple Square Handcrafted Aluminum Swing Arm, a Baja Designs Squadron Pro LED Headlight, all managed by the aRacer: RC Super 2 ECU. Special thanks to Yoshimura RD for the (high mount) RS9-T Full Titanium Exhaust system that was meant to fit the 2014-2020 Grom, but we modified it to fit the 2022+ 3rd gen.
We were blessed this time around to have the full support of our partners/sponsors. A special thanks (in no particular order) to Chimera Engineering, Yoshimura-RD, Racing Bros, G Craft, aRacer USA, and Baja Designs. We’d also like to highlight and thank Honda Powersports for making the dream happen!
